How to Get Your Business Recommended by ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity (2026)
A practical GEO playbook: how AI assistants choose which businesses to mention, the on-site and off-site signals that matter, and how to measure your AI visibility.
More buyers now ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google's AI Overviews for recommendations before they ever visit a website. If your business isn't named in those answers, you are invisible at the moment of decision. Getting recommended is not luck, and it isn't something you can switch on with one trick. It follows from a set of signals you can build deliberately. This is the playbook we use for clients and for our own site.
How do you get your business recommended by ChatGPT?
AI assistants recommend businesses they can find, understand and trust. Make sure AI crawlers can access your site, publish answer-first pages with specific facts, pricing and comparisons, add structured data, and earn mentions on the third-party sources AI tools cite most: review sites, directories, "best of" lists, Reddit and YouTube. Then measure AI referrals and run a monthly prompt check.
How AI assistants choose which businesses to mention

AI assistants answer from two places: what the model learned during training, and what it retrieves from the web at the moment you ask. For recommendations, the second matters most. Each platform leans on different sources. A study of 680 million AI citations by Profound found that Wikipedia made up 47.9% of ChatGPT's top ten cited sources, while Reddit made up 46.7% of Perplexity's; Google's AI Overviews spread citations more evenly across Reddit, YouTube, Quora and other sites.
Platform | Leans on | What to prioritize |
|---|---|---|
Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | Pages that already rank well in Google, plus forums and video | Classic SEO, answer-first content, structured data |
ChatGPT | Reference sites, "best X" list articles and authoritative brand pages | Directory and list mentions, clear comparison and pricing pages |
Perplexity | Community sources such as Reddit, plus fresh articles and video | Genuine community participation, recently updated content |
Step 1: make sure AI can access and understand your site

Check robots.txt: don't accidentally block search and AI crawlers such as Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot.
Submit your sitemap to Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, since several assistants draw on search indexes.
Serve your main content as HTML, not only inside scripts or images.
Add structured data: Organization, Service, Article with a named author, FAQPage and BreadcrumbList.
Step 2: publish content AI can quote

Answer first: a 40–60-word direct answer under each question-style heading.
Be specific: prices, timelines, locations, tools and numbers beat adjectives.
Cover buying questions: pricing guides, "X vs Y" comparisons, "best X for Y" pages and clear definitions are the formats AI answers are built from.
Use tables and short sections that make sense when quoted on their own.
Show who wrote it: a named author with real credentials and a visible "last updated" date.
Keep it fresh: refresh key pages every quarter.
Step 3: earn mentions where AI looks

Your own pages are only half the job. What other sites say about you often decides whether you are recommended.
Review platforms and directories relevant to your industry, with complete profiles and recent reviews.
"Best of" and comparison lists: pitch inclusion with something useful, such as data, a guest contribution or a case study.
Communities: answer real questions on Reddit, Quora and industry forums without spamming links.
Video: short YouTube walkthroughs of your product or process.
Digital PR: original data and expert commentary that journalists and bloggers cite.
Step 4: make your brand unambiguous

AI systems need to be sure which company you are, especially if your name is similar to others. Use the same company name, description, address and contact details everywhere. In your Organization schema, include your legal name, alternate names, logo, founder and sameAs links to every official profile, from LinkedIn to your review and directory listings. Give key people author pages that link to their professional profiles.
Step 5: measure your AI visibility

Signal | Where to find it |
|---|---|
Impressions in Google's AI features | Google Search Console, generative AI performance report (where available) |
Visits from AI assistants | GA4 traffic acquisition: sources such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com |
Share of voice in answers | A monthly check of 10–20 buyer questions in each assistant, logging whether you are named or cited |
Leads from AI referrals | GA4 lead events broken down by source and landing page |
Expect some AI traffic to show up as direct visits, because app-based assistants don't always pass a referrer.
Common mistakes
Blocking AI crawlers by accident through robots.txt, firewall or bot-protection rules.
Publishing generic, keyword-stuffed content that gives an AI nothing specific to quote.
Relying only on your own website and ignoring third-party mentions.
Using fake reviews or paid, undisclosed mentions, which damage trust and can backfire.
Never checking what AI assistants actually say about you.
